Mary Ellen Iskenderian, President and CEO of the Women’s World Bank gave a talk this month in Orange County on “Investing in Women, Transforming Lives.”
She was the keynote speaker for the annual luncheon of Impact Giving–an emerging group of women who partner to give dollars here and abroad. Impact Giving was founded a few years ago by a small group of women who wanted to leverage their dollars and create an interactive giving circle.
Mary Ellen, visiting from her offices in New York, told stories about the women supported by small banking and financial arrangements in Africa, Asia and Latin America. What emerged was the struggle to survive, and the tenacity of women to bring their families a better quality of life. She also gave counsel to the group–encouraging them to think about giving multiple year grants, to ease the burden of non-profits struggling in this economy.
