I know this question probably won’t make it to the cocktail party conversation, but I get asked a lot about my field of study and–most people don’t understand the field of urban planning or its potential role, and the same is true for landscape architects.
I was invited this month to speak to the national convention of landscape architects and was reminded of our common mission–to improve the environments in which we live, work and play.
And we do this with some technical skills–and some vision skills. There aren’t too many professions where the task is to think about a better future and design it, or create policy to improve it. And so I was more thankful about having pursued this degree, and how it has opened up a way of thinking and fed my curiosity.
I shared some of the reasons why urban planners and landscape architects should set out to improve fresh food environments…and why this might improve our overall community health. Did you know the percentage of children with chronic health conditions doubled in twelve years? More on this later…..
